It looks like Øbro tournaments stopped in 2022? :( If I am not missing something with Google Translate... I found this website: https://oebroskak.dk/turneringer/
My guess (and it is just a guess) is that the two humps in membership is to do with careers rather than historical influence of specific players. Speaking as someone who was actively playing as a child, then not for 30 years, and active again as I reach retirement…,
Hey Martin cool post! I just incidentally picked up “Learn from Bent Larsen” because he’s one player whose games I have yet to study but really want to. I’ll be reading through it soon.
As far as “chess player pools” go my experience is limited to Northern CA. Specifically in the Sacramento area. I have heard many times that Northern CA (we are split into two “states” by the USCF between northern and Southern California) is a relatively strong club player pool compared to the rest of the country. Who knows? As of right now I’m in the 84th percentile for my state but 86th for my country. So maybe we are underrated.
I’ve also heard that often Sacramento chess club players win events outside the city a lot. But I’ve always felt this was maybe an exaggeration.
Maybe local patriotisme also kicks in at some point or stories begin to form after painful defeats ;)
Re: Larsen - look forward to go through his games. Very creative and innovative player. His annotations is also interesting to read if you get to read his own writing
Haha, so any good tournaments in Denmark that you can recommend? :D
I can recommend the easter tournament that is al the national championship. Also the new year tournament in Øbro skakklub is fun

There definitely is a career/child effect, but it is just more present in the Danish membership numbers vs the Norwegian.
